When I say headings, I do mean only headings, sub-headings, taglines, slogans - anything with minimum text. These do not look good as the main body font and for walls of text because at a smaller size, it becomes impossible to read.

If you need help using Google fonts on your site, try this or this. You can now (easily) use Google fonts on your desktop if you download them through the SkyFonts app.

Tumblr have announced new reblog and like buttons using the variables {LikeButton} and {ReblogButton}. Sample code can be viewed from the updated theme documentation.

“Now Tumblr users can interact with a post right from your theme,” said Tumblr staff in an email to theme developers. “All you have to do is embed our new Like and Reblog buttons into your design — we’ll take care of the rest!”

Tumblr’s new reblog and like buttons make use of Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG), meaning they don’t lose resolution when they are enlarged, perfect for high pixel density displays. The buttons are available in three colors: grey, white, or black.

If your themes already use other code for Tumblr like and reblog buttons, staff have advised that developers “need to update to the latest code”.

Okay, it's actually pretty simple so here we go..

In order to make a gif as your tumblr icon you’ll need to download this add on (if you’re on chrome user) in order to see it. That being said, firefox, internet explorer, and opera users don’t need any add ons to see it. They have it easy.

After you’ve done that, you’re going to need a .gif to .apng converter. I recommend using this one (for windows) or this one (for macs). Just click the green button to download it, and i promise you it’s safe ‘cause i use it. Alright, now that you’ve downloaded the converter, it’s time to make the gif you want to use as your icon.

Remember, you have to make sure the size is 64x64 or it won’t work. This is important! After you’ve made your gif or picked up to use, just open up your converter, pick the input file and then hit convert! Super easy, right? 

I know, I just blew your mind. It happens.

Hello there! So I’ve decided to make a tutorial on how to install common pages and themes, along with a few extra notes. The following tutorial covers: [updated: 03/02/13]

WebKit Filter properties

Recently,most of the theme makers are using different kinds of filters to give different styles to their themes or their own blogs. How many themes have the option for Grayscale Photos and Photosets,right? Other theme makers use the Blurfilter to make a cool effect,also. So I’d like to present all the properties WebKit filters can offer.

• Grayscale
  Most theme makers are using it now to make more monochrome themes.But if you’d like so,you can make a balance of it:Instead of only colors or grayscale,you can make the photos “kind of” grayscale, just by using .5 or .3 instead of only 0 or 1.
• Blur
  Another filter frenquently used,makes your layout more unique. On this case,you won’t use just 1 or 6, you must put px after the value.For example: blur(2px).
• Sepia
  Just like the name says, this filter allows you to give the photos a old look. To use it, you just have to put values like the ones on the grayscale filter.
• Saturate
  This one is not really used much with CSS, but those who make graphics probably understands what it means. On this one, you use numbers like 2 or 4 to increase the saturation.
• Opacity
  All kinds of themes use this filter, this allows you to make the elements more transparent  so you can see what’s behind it, or even make hidden elements. Like grayscale, you’ll use values from 0 to 1.
• Brightness
  Also, like the name says, this filter allows you to make the brightness of a image or anything else more intense. Also uses values from 0 to 1.
• Contrast
  This one now allows you to give your elements a normal or intense contrast. It may be a interesting filter to make more colorful themes. Values variate from 0 to 1.
• Hue-rotate
  Another exception,instead of 0 to 1,you can use a whole number,but using the deg unit,like this: hue-rotate(120deg). This one allows you,how you can see, to rotate elements, making different effects and forms for your themes.
• Invert
  Another interesting effect,it inverts the color scheme of your photos.Most cellphone cameras these days have this effect too. Also use it with values from 0 to 1.

How can I use it?

All these filters can be really useful to create various effects, but how to use it?
After creating the element you’d like to customize with these filters, add on the bolded part:

.example_box { background-color:white; width:30px; height:30px; -webkit-filter:blur(2px) grayscale(.5) saturate(6); } ;

You can substitute the italic parts for the filters and values you’d like to use, since this was just an example. So,basically,you have this :

-webkit-filter: filter name(value);

NOTE:These are WebKit Filters. It won’t work on all browsers.  I’d highly recommend you to use Chrome.
In case you’d like to use the grayscale filter,many theme makers have a cross-browser code for it on their blogs. Just look at their resources!

For those of you that are interested in learning about cool CSS transitions, make sure you check out this “Animatable” created by Lea Verou!

As quoted from her blog:

“It’s essentially a gallery of basic transitions. It aims to show how different animatable properties look when they transition and to broaden our horizons about which properties can be animated. Here’s nine of the thirty slides I came up with for a poster-making workshop I was hired to give at the very last minute. Not very professional of the org, but I was bored enough to agree and hey, I got a free shirt!

Some basic rules of poster-making. I was actually expected to teach step-by-step Photoshop basics, but from experience, I know that two hours is insufficient to retain anything gleaned from watching somebody do their own version of a tedious process. There are many ways to get the same result on Photoshop, so rather than teaching the attendees technical work, I opted to teach them design basics.

I also taught the attendees “In der Beschränkung…” which has sort of transformed into my mantra. It’s generally regarded to mean “less is more” but what it really means is that masterful work reveals itself when perfection is attained within limits.

Ideally this means that perfection is when all elements in place are vital in such a way as to take out one element would be to destroy the balance of things.

Sometimes, however, I take “Beschränkung” to mean less of an effort. As in, do the best job you can possibly do with as little effort as you can manage.

Not a very good philosophy to live by, but I can manage.
